Komodo National Park Trip (Part 4)

Snowy at Gili Laba
Expecting the sunrise from one of the peak at Gili Lawa Darat, or some call it Gili Laba island.

Not to missed the sunrise we woke up early around 4:00 am. Not all of us wants to hike again. I was still not in a good condition, my fever even worse at least no more pain pumping in the head. I still have shore throat. But I decided to try. I may stop if I feel really sick. We agree to climb up by second trek route which less steep. Fauzi said it may takes time compare to the steeper one. We start exactly 4:30 am and some of us has flash light and head lamp and some not. We walked around 30 minutes and then the sun light already coming. We walk little bit faster.

Intan again had problem to walk up, for me not difficult at all. I was surprise with my condition I could continue all the way to the peak without having any breathing problem. I was just more carefully where I step. It has some hole on the way and I don't want to twist my ankle.

Yesss... we are the trekking champion

At the top I did not feel good, so I stopped and not move around to the other stone where most of the people make good pictures. I did not want, just enjoy the warm of the sun on my back bone.

Watching Komodo Island from Gili Laba

Yeaaaaah!!!
Not really lucky for the spectacular sunrise but we did the mission to climb all the Komodo summit. Yeaaahh!!!

This was on the last day of our trip. We should make another snorkling after Gili Laba, but I could not do it anymore, I really exhausted due to my cold and fever. After when we stop at Sebayur island, I was checking the snorkling site. It is a good site with a strong current which not good for beginner. The under water is mixed between soft and hard coral like at Bidadari island. More small fishes in different bright colors.

At Komodo Dive Center, Sebayur Island
Then in the lunch time we were stop at Kanawa. I decided not to do another swim, which is a mistake. I regret later that I did not take a chance to see the under water at Kanawa. Hope to see it in another trip. That's the end of our boat trip around Komodo National Park Islands.

We land earlier than it supposed to be. We have to bring our friend Bonar for checking his twisted ankle, and it is worst than we expected, not only twisted but he has fracture in his heel. But the doctor give him a letter that he could fly back to Semarang, there is no orthopedic doctor anyway at Siloam Hospital in Labuhan Bajo. But it is nice to saw him could smile again. I was really sorry for him that he could not see most of the place.

Good to see Bonar could smile again

He was the only one which well prepared for the trekking activities, he carried with him the good trekking shoes. When the other just wearing sandals. I found it later in the internet that some trekking shoes are slippery in the stoney trek. Specially the hard Vibram sol

Komodo National Park Trip (Part 3)

I woke up today, still not feeling good except knowing that today we would hike up Padar Island make me really exciting. The day before I saw so many boat standing side by side in the water where our boat mooring. That morning not much boat anymore, and our boat seems stay away from the shore. Mia suggest me to do some yoga move when she knows I still have headache. Strecthing and dogdown pose really helped, slowly my headache and dizzyness gone. At least I could swallow some banana I grabbed for my breakfast.

Prepare myself for the trekking, changing the battery, and packing my other things in the backpack. The sun was shining, and the day looks promising compare to the storm in the night before. When I saw the hill, not sure that I could climb it with my condition. But the view of stony hill of Padar Island hypnotizing me. So sorry for Bonar, he still stay in cabin when we down to the small motor boat which bring us to the beach.

When I write this after 3 weeks from the trip. I am thinking that I would like to go there again oneday.

Everybody is ready for the walk. It is much better than what I though. We walk up slowly, make some stop every few minutes, many youngster walk faster than us. It does not matter, we are the oldies of 50+ do better than most of our friends. We could walk so far are beyond average people on our age.

Snowy at Padar Island

View of Padar Island
The view at the top of Padar Island so amazing. And I am happy that finally I was there in the famous island, long weekend make this place full of visitors. The stone where the best spot to make selfie photo always occupied. We make so much photos there, we all just happy to be there. I want stay more, sitting hours just to see the view from above to surrounding. I don't want to leave that place but I could not, we have to leave and we have to go back to the boat.

A plate of nice nasi goreng with fried egg already waiting and we were heading to Pink Beach. The next destination is Pink Beach at Komodo Island. Due to the changing schedule, it was high tide when we were there. Danang husband of Tanti complaining why they call it Pink Beach, the sand not really pink colour. I said may be we are in different place. I could not explain them that we were not in the right time because of the accident of Bonar. We supposed at the Pink Beach a day before at late afternoon before go to Padar, during low tide so we could see the really pink sand of the Pink Beach. Additional small boat to land at Pink Beach also was not calculate before, we supposed to swim direct from our boat to the beach. We have to pay 20k per person for the boat, to land and to bring back after. I was not disappoint at all, it always happen in the trip, we could not always get what we want.

Happy me

The water was really cold at Pink Beach but I enjoy my snorkling time. Every island have different underwater view. Bidadari island has beautiful sea fans and mixed between soft and hard coral. Kelor mostly hard coral, with amazing fishes wants to eat you, may be because it was eating time from some fishes. And Pink Beach has mostly soft coral and the table coral at deeper place. It was good I packed with me a shorty with my snorkling gear. With my condition, high fever from the cold I catch during the trip it was good to have wetsuit to warm me in that cold water.

Finished Pink beach we were back to the boat for lunch and we move to Gili Laba. The guide Mr Fauzi tried to convince us that we could see beautiful sunset from the other hill at Gili Laba. I am not really sure because I never have in my life good sunset view from the hill or top of the mountain. The opposite situation sunrise better in the mountain. Sunset always better at ground or sea level. But I said may be we are lucky we have spectacular sunset with the hanging clouds in front of us.

From Gili Laba Island, waiting for sunset

Komodo National Park Trip (Part 2)

Was very very good dinner in the boat. The cook in charge to prepare the meal is a young guy, his food is amazing. Or may be we just really hungry. the day was tiring enough to make us sleep early after the dinner.

Most of us woke up early and we found our boat was the first one stay right at Loh Buaya gate. Some monkeys stay in the pier, try to jump in the boat, or they are interested to the coconut we have. The crews tried all the time to keep them away. We are ready at 7 am to start the walk around Rinca. The ticket guys still not there, and the ranger just finish breakfast.

The reason we start early is to avoid the crowd, there's a news that people and some boats are waiting long at Padar Island the day before. Fauzi the guide said we should not waiting to long just to land in the island.

When we reach the entrance gate then we passing a river bed which sometimes dry. It is like a wadi. That time near the first entrance laying a komodo dragon on the path way where we should walk. We have to walk a round the komodo dragon where the river is.

There's some group of Komodo laying around near the camp house, where the kitchen is. There's where the only place where the bunch of Komodo we spot. The other animal we could spot is some Maleo bird. The rangers said, those bird which always dig the ground, for the Komodo to lay their eggs. Some kind of camouflage to hide from predator.

We took a short course, these consist a walk at the jungle, the hill up and a view from the top to the bay. Just a short walk some friends did not feel good. They said the smells from the Komodo are terrible, which I could not smells it. Intan did not feel good at all and start vomiting. I am not sure it come from the smells. I thought it come from the heat we got the day before and a night sleeping outdoor, with very high humidity bring very wet dew in early morning. People not used to it could get sick.

Snowy at Loh Buaya

There's a story in Rinca which really hard for me to write it. It make me really sad to remember that moment.

Somehow, I was little bit serious when we start to walk that morning. I made a short speech, said to all the group, please not to underestimate, watch where you walk, don't stay away from the group, and keep follow to the guide and the rangers. Loh Buaya - Rinca Island is a wild place, animals are wild, the nature are wild.

We split into two when Intan get sick. Some of us walk first to reach the hill top while some are waiting for Intan to recover.
It was a happy moment when we have enough time to make pictures. Jumping around like teenagers. When we are in the safe place the two rangers are take care for Intan.

Still could jumping high

When we finish at the hill top we start walk down back to the camp. Then we heard that Bonar has problem, he may broke his leg. I did not see myself how that happen. When we heard that, everybody instead of quite and calm they getting nervous, everybody make bla bla bla, start talking like they know better. Intan ex. FA, though that she knows everything, of course she has training for that but herself not fit enough to do something, with big voice start make order to the rangers to do this to do that, herself really in trouble from get sick. Danang get nervous and start talking this and that, everybody too much bla bla bla. I was so nervous to see how my friends acting like a child, I was really fed up. How many times I had to say be quite, be quite, and no one listen to me, made me very upset. And down near the camp the bunch of Komodo on their way to the sleeping place got excited to hear us. It was a terrifying moment. The rangers has to help to bring Bonar down, and down the bunch of Komodo ready to attack us because we are too noisy.

Alhamdulillah that the Komodos still full stomach and too lazy to hunt us down. We could safely reach the camp. But we all shock, still did not know what we will do next.

Once we reach the boat we have to decided where to go. That time I was ready to cancel all the trip and bring Bonar to the hospital at Labuhan Bajo. But when Bonar hear that there's a tradional healer at the Island at Kampung Rinca, he choose himself to go to that lady healer. I did not want to get involved to his decision. The Capten made mayday announcement since we change our route and we heading to Kampung Rinca.

We stay half day at the pier at Kampung Rinca. I have a trip around that small village, this is a Bajau village, very poor place, where people mostly living from fishing, and make dried fish they sell in Labuhan Bajo.

The kids at the pier of Kampung Rinca

Making fishing boat

Everybody busy from what I did not know, and we had very late lunch. I have terrible day, suddenly I got terrible headache, I can not eat dinner, thrown up everything in my stomach and talking with the toilet. I got fever too. And did not know what to do, I took my normal medicine it did not help at all, but I scare to take a stronger medicine, since most of the time drugs like paracetamol could make me worse. I tried to sleep but I could not, the whole body was aching, sore and pain in the back and bone. I took Antimo just to make sleep better. It was not a good day for us.

Komodo National Park Trip (Part 1)

Finally have time to sit in peace and write all the memories about my last trip around Komodo.

This trip was plan since almost a year until I finally got all ten people to filling and share the renting boat. I booked the boat since last year, by give 1 million "tanda jadi", a little bit gambling because only 3 friends which ready to join me and 4 including myself. Even Hans still not sure this will happen.

The preparation of the trip little bit crazy. Not me. Mostly girls thinks for beauty than function. Thinking about what to wear to look good in the pictures.Mostly friend of mine has no experience with outdoors, I have to convinced them to prepare good walking shoes, comfort and has grip to walk on the stony uphill, and what to wear to protect from the heat during snorkling. And I am happy they follow my advice. The only thing I can not say anything that Intan little bit worry that we will starving during boat trip. She bring with her lots of food, a luggage full with fried chicken, mpek mpek and bakso. I could not refuse, just enjoyed what she did.

I was arrived at Labuhan Bajo on 4th of Mei a day before the trip to see Daenk Noeardi the boat owner. Came along with me some friends coming from Semarang. The flight from Semarang have to arrive a day before so that the boat trip could start early. When I met Daenk Noeardi I was surprise to know that Daenk is a young guy. I was though that he is and old annoying guy, and I was completely wrong, he is young, funny and friendly guy. And he is reliable.

Day 1 trip, the trip was arrange base on the situation as that time was a long weekend where there's a lot of crowd of tourist in some places. So, our guide Mr Fauzi arrange the trip anti mainstream against the crowd and also base on the tide condition so that we could mooring the boat nicely not in the crowd. And our first visit is Bidadari Island. We was mooring at the other side of the island where there's no resort. It was beautiful white sandy beach, but we have to jump in the water to go to the beach and start snorkling.

The second place we visit is Kelor island. It is a small island with a very steep hill. Not so high but the way to the peak is really challenging. At beginning I doubted I could climb that hill, but slowly I step and step by step I could control my breath. A month workout is really useful for this trekking.

Rina friend from high school she got difficulties to climb up and the boys has to almost dragged her up. At the end she got it. She could reach almost at the top.

But, the view from the top is really pays off with all the hassle.

The next destination on day 1 is watching sun goes down near Kalong Island. We arrived near Kalong Island just before sunset. Quite and peaceful around us... some of us really tired because they arrived at Labuhan Bajo that morning just before the trip. Lack of sleep and exhausted from the heat during trekking in Kelor. Some Phinisi boat stay near us. I always love and admiring those beautiful schooner.

Right when the sun disappear in the West one bat the leader comes out from the mangrove, another one out. From one and two bat and become thousands.

And before it really dark we left the place to Loh Buaya at Rinca Island for the next day trip to see Komodo. We stay the first night in front of Loh Buaya gate.

A Day in Museum

Actually not really a day. At least two.

Of course this just a joke.

VOC Replica boat at Scheepvaart Museum

Bodensee in windy Summer Time

Bodensee in Winter Time

Boat Park and Service Area, Lindau - Germany

Restaurant apung berupa replika kapal bangsa Phoenician
